John, I had a similar issue with my old Eee 1000 when 14.04 came out and had to convert to Lubuntu.
Haven't tried void yet, but since I'm two laptops away from that old netbook I may use that to test it out.

I'd personally install Void Linux with LXDE and dmenu. Lubuntu 14.04LTS
with dmenu would be an excellent choice too. With 2GB RAM, I'd keep
Unity 1000 miles from this computer.
