One relatively painless way to install Arch is to use Evo/Lution - see http://www.evolutionlinux.com/ and http://xmodulo.com/install-arch-linux-easy-way-evolution.html

After several failed attempts at installing Arch, I did it twice successfully with Evo/Lution.

The handbook is reasonable enough.  There are a few things I'd
improve, and probably should.  :)  But, you'll do fine with the
handbook.
