Intel has grandiose plans for Optane, but there's doubt in the tech review world of how far it'll get before Intel loses interest and starts pushing some other tech instead.

The TL;DR for Optane is probably that it's another step between SSDs and system memory as far as speed. It's terribly expensive now, but should drop over time.

I was most interested when I heard that there will be Optane DIMMs.

"optane" is the name for stuff with that internal architecture.  The
first products I've heard of using "optane" technology are an
enterprise full SSD and a consumer little chunk of fast SSD to cache a
mechanical hard drive.  So the "disk cache" sense would refer to the
consumer device (that comes in 16GB or 32GB sizes), but be aware that
there are also other products using the "optane" brand.
