[PLUG] Copying files from unbootable machine

Hi all,

I have some important files I need to copy off of an Ubuntu machine that does not boot. I booted Ubuntu 16.04 from a thumb drive, and can access the file system on hard drive which does not boot, but I am not able to copy those files off to another thumb drive for example. It tells me I am not the owner. The drive is not encrypted.

I see from searching that options include remounting the drive and changing ownership, but did not see a circumstance exactly like mine. What is the easiest way to gain ownership and copy off these files?

Thanks,

Eric
