The main issue is that the power comes from a RTG (radioisotope thermoelectric generator).  It's 
basically a stack of Plutonium discs inside a cyllinder of thermocouples.
When it leaves earth it's hot hot hot but as the plutonium decays, the heat and therefore the power, 
drops.  

By the time they reach another star system they will primarily be inert lead discs (LONG TIME.)
