Digital Ocean has always been fantastic for me. $5 droplets VMs pack a fair amount of power. They encourage the use of SSH keys during spin up, and there are tons of Ansible playbooks out there to get started.

The folks at Linode are decent as well!

Panix (panix.com) is -- so far -- the best I've found.  Inexpensive,
very high technical clue level, fixes things before I know they're broken,
communicates well, excellent support.  Also they'll support pretty much
any distribution within reason if asked.
