I saw this article on the 10 'best' docks. I don't entirely get these
because they look like my bottom bar, but they get bigger when you
mouse-over. I figured I'd find out, and installed Cairo, the most popular.
It was... exactly as I thought.
A few minutes in, my external monitor lost signal and no amount of
plugging and unplugging would reconnect it.
I remember when I bought the beast (System76), it came with Gnome, the
only thing they supported, and everything worked. So I installed it,
signed into it, and touchpad/power/monitor continued to not work the way
they should.
Going back to XFCE, I noticed that the touchpad issues had gone! Because
the touchpad wasn't working at all.
I'm just bitching. Hopefully my misfortune will be your amusement.
