+1 on linode, smallest node they offer is 5 bucks a month and you get the dns service as a value add.

What I do here is set up a local DNS on my local area network. In my
case I use unbound for both queries to the Internet (with caching) and
very limited authoritative caching LAN wide only. If I really needed
authoritative DNS, I'd use NSD, the companion to Unbound.

My DNS queries resolve very quickly. I'd assume NSD-based auth queries
on your servers would also resolve quickly, because NSD is small
software: Nothing like BIND.
