Re: [PLUG] Possibly Off-Topic but looking for a "server"

Try Ebay something like an usff from HP/Lenovo or Dell in like a 6th gen Intel might get that cheap and will probably serve your purpose.

Microcenter is becoming more and more of a shell of itself.  I was just there last week to pick up a small system for the wife's office and the vibe of the place was off- even more than the usual all-we-know-is-windows-intel-and-nvidia sense you get when you talk to their people.  That said they do still have refurb and open box items:

Prices are clearly higher but that is to be expected.  So is the limited selection.

Also, to Rich M., our of curiosity, would an O-droids not work in your builds?  I really like this C4 that is running my OpenHAB server.  The z-wave interface is USB and the unit is always on.  Zero hardware problems so far (A little over 2 years now).  No build in wifi so that could be a show stopper for you if you needed that.

Newegg has used gear around that price.  The issue is that the only
way to consolidate significant amounts of used hardware tends to
involve either auctions or mail order, and the administrative costs
tend to discourage low prices.  I'm guessing that you're more likely
to find a box full of random junk for $100 than a piece of random junk
for $10.

Microcenter used to sell used gear.  It seems like they've stopped
that.  You could probably search for sales of used corporate stuff
that is local - big companies will often outsource selling off-service
hardware.  Expect lots of 4 year old laptops missing hard drives and
that sort of thing, or maybe the reseller will just add a hard drive
and OS to get a better price.

For actual server hardware I'm guessing ebay would be a place to go.
The issue tends to be that a lot of older stuff uses a TON of power,
and I'm pretty sensitive to TCO as electricity use is significant if
you do the math.  I'd rather pay $40 more and get something that uses
1/10th the power of some old Xeon system.

The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either—but right through every human heart—and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains … an unuprooted small corner of evil. - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
