It really is a two edged sword. On one hand there goes a lot of
FreeBSD systems in the wild. On the other hand there have been
concerns about their ability to keep up-to-date, how they integrate
apps and how they deal with security advisories. That is an ugly mix,
once you are behind upstream you have to take care of security
yourself. They also developed some things that they wanted upstreamed
into FreeBSD, which were rejected. That puts a dent in the
enthusiasm.
It is hard to imagine that life for them will be easier on Debian.
In the end the defining feature is ZFS, not the underlying OS.
