Re: [PLUG] Cloud Hype Hits Reality? |
As a DevOps and Cloud engineer I want to make a general statement that is as agnostic as possible.
Your work loads should dictate both architecture and ideal infrastructure.
With that said, I openly endorse discussions on cloud but I will say that for too long, marketing departments sold serverless as a mystical one size fits all solution which has failed miserably. Conversely when I worked at the Federal Reserve, cloud spend was desirable even at a premium as much of the talent to run a proper data center is severely lacking. The premium for cloud is unfortunately justified in some circumstances and the need is unfortunately growing. Before people openly cast stones, realize many people relying on VMware now have their data centers that are more expensive than the cloud.
It's a messy world out there but I have feeling that the current environment is showing a greater need for actual professionals basing their decisions on real numbers versus marketing materials. As the landscape gets even more interesting the cloud has shown what self service portals should be like everywhere and how API development for infrastructure is no longer a luxury but a must have. I would recommend people start getting comfortable with services such as Lumin or Equinox will become more necessary to both cloud and datacenters.
I do see a renaissance of the need for foundational Linux knowledge by formerly cloud native organizations. With those skills, I see a healthy need to be comfortable with tmux, screen, grep, vim, jq, yq, awk, and sed. As a cloud and DevOps engineer I am finding mastery of the command line becoming more necessary. AI is only making things even more difficult as I find myself debugging in ever more restrictive environments. The world is quite bleak for exclusive click ops practitioners wanting more career progression. Who would have thought the command line would become the most coveted skill for infrastructure today (sarcasm for present company)?

The quote: "more than a third of organizations surveyed reckoned that
their move to the cloud had failed to live up to promises of
cost-effectiveness."
Stay tuned for the big story of 2026: "AI Doesn't seem to help as much
as was expected. Billions invested have not paid off."
:)
Have a great day!
