I have used aCalendar for years. You can use the app with your choice of CalDAV provider. Zoho.com is oriented towards business customers but provides a free personal mail and calendaring service and offer a web interface; there are many others.

Adblock Browser is made by eyeo, the same company that does the Adblock Plus addon. I've been using it for years.

Someone mentioned about having to have gmail. I've never had a gmail account--you used to be able to create a Google account with a third-party email and according to my quick search, you still can.

The time I felt most in control of my phone was when I had cyanogenmod. But failing that, I recommend everyone on android get NoRootFirewall--it's lightweight and lets you block individual apps from accessing the internet (wifi and mobile data separately). You can block a lot of daemons that you never knew existed.

PS: aCalendar, Adblock Browser and NoRootFirewall are available on Google Play, but if you want FOSS on android you should install F-Droid, if you haven't already.
