Recently, I've been using ChatGPT to find various information. In some cases, it's worked very well and been very helpful. In others, it's been flat-out wrong and almost psychotic.
Good stuff:
1. It can neatly summarize data in a concise way when given very specific queries.
For example:
My new wife sold her house in 2023, and I sold mine in 2024, and we bought one together. I asked about the rules for excluding capital gains on these houses. ChatGPT gave me a well-organized answer, which I was able to confirm using actual IRS documents and worksheets. Very Nice!
My dog was showing some distress and I suspected pancreatitis. I documented all the symptoms and it gave me a good discussion of possible causes (which included pancreatitis).
2. It can answer specific technical how-to queries. it can
replace general search queries
For example: It correctly told me how to mount an ISO file and read its contents.
Psychotic Stuff:
1. it will give you totally bogus information, and when challenged, apologize and then give more bogus info
For example:
I asked about command options for using the "greaseweazle" (a device to access floppies on a very low level). It gave me several totally invalid command line options. When I told it that 1 of the options was invalid, it apologized, said I was correct, and then gave me the same list of invalid options but deleting the one I had challenged. This happened twice with invalid options before I gave up.
So anyway, I'm not worried about the upcoming robot uprising
since they still haven't found a way to put any "I" in "AI".
ChatGPT reminds me of very smart guy who's read lots of books, but
has no clue how the world really works. It's spouts stuff it
reads, but has no actual understanding or experience about those
subjects.
