[PLUG] [plug-announce] Tue Jul 8 - PLUG North - "May the Source Be With You: Spreading Open Source from x86 to the Outer Rim" by Elizabeth Joseph (7pm at SkySwitch) |
PLUG North will be meeting on Tuesday, July 8 at SkySwitch (the former CoreDial)'s offices in Blue Bell, beginning at 7 PM. Directions to the meeting location can be found at the end of this email. This month, PLUG welcomes back Elizabeth Joseph, who leads the Open Source Office for IBM Z and LinuxOne at IBM. Lyz will be giving a talk entitled "May the Source Be With You: Spreading Open Source from x86 to the Outer Rim". Want to hear about open source software on mainframes again? I’m here to oblige! Since my last talk at PLUG North back in 2023 we’ve seen dozens of traditionally Linux-based tools come to z/OS (and remain open source!), another release of the legendary IBM LinuxONE mainframe, and increased support for both Linux and z/OS on CI and development platforms like GitLab and GitHub. Emulation used by open source projects to cross-compile has also improved, with developers from IBM increasingly contributing code to QEMU and new developers external to IBM contributing to Unicorn, the CPU emulator framework. I’ll also talk about how the continued rise of ARM and the era of GPUs has caused a new wave of organizations considering non-x86 architectures and generally other ways of looking at how they do computational work. Lyz tells me you can even run Emacs on mainframes these days! The meeting will start at 7. Doors will open around 6:45. We will be meeting at SkySwitch's office space in Blue Bell, PA.
