[PLUG] WireGuard client turns off wifi connection

I'm trying to setup WireGuard VPN on a pfSense firewall and an Arch Linux client. I set up the server following instructions at https://www.wundertech.net/how-to-set-up-wireguard-on-pfsense/ and the client following instructions at https://www.xmodulo.com/wireguard-vpn-network-manager-gui.html but I am unable to establish a connection from the client. When I try connecting, it shuts off the wlan0 wifi connection, and presumably therefore the network packets never reach the server. How can I prevent the wifi from being turned off?
