Most people today just say ham radio but a transceiver is nothing more than an radio that can send and receive. My first ham radio back in the 1990's was an HX-202 and I recall the sales rep at the time calling it a transceiver. I though it was a bit weird- just say radio 🤣 Either way, being called a transceiver has nothing to do with how many bands a radio has or whether it can do a mode that is not FM.
My first was an HTX-202 as well. I actually got a QSL card for receiving the Space Shuttle station (SAREX) while mobile using it. (Receive only - they couldn’t hear me.) I had sold mine many years ago, but a while back I found one for sale online with the classic “ER1” failure (dead soldered-on memory battery). Easy fix for that. Works fine now:

Now that's very cool Tom.  I had not thought about my 202 in forever until this thread.  I got that VX-5R and never looked back.  I can't remember what I did with mine!
