Wouldn't using Gmail with Linux be equivalent to charging an electric car with a diesel generator?

So, I used to use Gmail with it fetching via POP3.  I've basically stop using Gmail since, but it is a very valid use case if you want to use Gmail as your MUA but not your MTA.

I also am looking to buy a gasoline/propane-powered generator that I can use to charge my electric car.  Doing so allows you to operate off-grid, and still is much more fuel-efficient than burning the gasoline directly in a car, for all the same reasons that a hybrid vehicle is more efficient than a conventional one.

In fact, I'm guessing the one of the most widespread use of diesel generators is in locomotives, which have been hybrid vehicles for ages, precisely because that makes them far more efficient and effective than a conventional engine.  I would think that anytime the demand for power isn't fairly constant you gain a lot of efficiency by using a hybrid model.  With a conventional engine you need to size the engine for peak power demand, and pay the price of idle power consumption.  A hybrid engine's fossil-fuel component can be sized for average demand, and has little or no idle power consumption.
