[PLUG] [plug-announce] Tue Jan 13 - PLUG North - "A Brief History of Time Syncing" by Walt Mankowski (7pm at SkySwitch)

PLUG North will be meeting on Tuesday, January 13 at SkySwitch's offices in Blue Bell, beginning at 7 PM EST. Directions to the meeting location can be found at the end of this email.

This month, PLUG welcomes back Walt Mankowski, who will be giving a talk entitled "A Brief History of Time Syncing".

The Internet comes with no guarantees about network bandwidth or topology, and so it seems like it should be impossible to accurately synchronize the time between two computers over the Internet. Surprisingly, this has been a solved problem since the development of the Network Time Protocol over 40 years ago.

Today it's easy to assume that all of our computers, phones, and other smart devices always have the correct time, but it wasn't always that way. How does NTP accomplish this seemingly impossible task? What does it even mean for the time to be "correct" in the first place? And what can we do when NTP isn't working?

The meeting will start at 7. Doors will open around 6:45. The presentation will start around 8. We will be meeting at SkySwitch's office space in Blue Bell, PA.
