Slow PPP Links

I'm posting this for someone else. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

I've recommended changing the mtu setting which hasn't helped.

I've also said that the kernel should be re-compiled with ppp support
compiled directly in, not as a module. He says it's not set as a module.

Hi,

I have a Gateway Pentium II PC. I have Windows 95 and Linux on it. I
have
Gateway Telepath X2 internal modem on COM2 and Zoom 56K V.90 external
fax modem on COM1. I am NOT using the Telepath modem. I use Zoom
modem only. My PPP link works great (connects @ 50,000) on Windows 95.
But on Linux it is very very ... slow and stalls every now and then. I
have
RedHat 5.1 Linux.

I have set up ppp0 interface from control-panel. My Zoom external
modem
is on /dev/ttyS0 and uses IRQ 4 exclusively. However both my video card
and
sound card seem to use IRQ 9 (got this info from Windows control panel).

Can this be a problem ? How to assign different IRQ to video card in
Linux ?

My modem init string is ATZ. I tried the init string my from
'mdmzt.inf' The
entries read

HKR, Init, 1,, "AT<cr>" ; do an "AT" to get autobaud correct (start
other init strings with 2)
HKR, Init, 2,, "AT &F E0 &C1 &D2 V1 S0=0\V1<cr>"

I used the Init 2 string also. No difference speed. I tried different
MRU & MTU
values. My /etc/ppp/options file is

/etc/ppp/options
----------------
lock
115200
crtscts
noauth
defaultroute
noipdefault
mru 296
mtu 296
asyncmap 0

kdebug 7

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
