I don't know if this works with all distributions but with
slackware I install everything and then edit the link in
/usr/lib/X11/lib/xinit/

e.g. to use fvwm95 you'd type

cd /usr/lib/X11/lib/xinit
rm xinitrc
ln -s xinitrc.fvwm95 xinitrc
