actually, that's about exactly as far as you should have gotten.  i.e.: the
kernel works and boots up, but barfs when it tries to load the root (initrd)
filesystem.  you'd get the same error if you specified the root filesystem type
as a module.  i did that once, putting ext2 and ide support as a module, 
forgetting the small detail that the module resided on an ext2 partition
on an ide drive... :)
