If you are using fetchmail/procmail that's the way to do it.  If you are
using an ISP's POP (like I am), you can set up the filters in your mail
client.  I've got it working in Kmail and Evolution.  If you use either
of these, I can give you the filter criteria I used.

By default, Spamassassin tags mail, and you can then manipulate it
however you want.  I run it through spamc with the -c parameter.  If its
spam, it returns "1", and "0" if not.  My filters shoot 1s into a spam
folder.  Out of the box, very few false positives.  You can fine tune it
by editing ~/.spamassassin/user_prefs.  The user_prefs file has its own
man page.  For a while I kept the file open in an editor while I check
my mail and adjusted my whitelists and blacklists.


I'm very please with it.
