Is there anyway to set this up so that at a graphical login you can choose
btwn the local system and a remote system?

Easy.

X -query solaris.server.blah

That will start the X server on Linux with Solaris as the client. (The terms "client" and "server" may seem backwards but it is correct for X11).

Setting up a chooser is slightly more work. You're going to want to read up on XDMCP if you want to have a GUI menu of all the systems you can log into graphically. But this is a built in function of X11. It's just a matter of getting all the configs right for this.
