i'm no debian expert, but I usually use

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

to configure X on woody.

The error message looks like it was unable to load the extmod
module.  Maybe you should attach your XF86Config file, as its
syntax seems unacceptable to the X server reading it.  Is there
a chance you are mixing parts of version 3 and version 4 of
xfree86?
