this is a frequent point of confusion with debian based grub.  if you
take a look at your menu.lst file, you'll see a section of
commented out options above the list of of boot images.  these are used
to set default options for the automatically generated list of boot
settings below.  _without uncommenting them_, there's probably an option
you should change to reference hda instead of hdb now.
