Re: [PLUG] RAID cards

To give a timely example, we had a Dell PowedEdge 1650 with attached
RAID die over the weekend. Talking to Dell today, they don't make the
machine any more, so they're going to replace it with a 18xx or 19xx,
which uses a different RAID controller with different data format, so
we get to lose the data.

Well, actually, we have a backup, and they're going to drop off a new
motherboard temporarily so we can get the machine running until the
replacement arrives... But still, it would have been nice to just
take the drives out of the 1650 shell and put them into the new shell
without needing to rebuild the OS and copy all the data off/on and
all.

Thanks,
    Aaron

Um. If one of my 3ware 9506s dies I will replace it with (wait for
it) another 3ware 9506, and restore the RAID set config, assuming it
doesn't just come cleanly off the disks (which it "should"), from
the saved config that's on disks not managed by those and that's
backed up.

If I'm replacing a *failed* RAID card... why wouldn't I replace it
with one from at least the same vendor? (It is entirely possible
to migrate from a 3ware 8xxx or 7xxx series controller to a 9xxx
one... no reason to expect that to change.)
