Re: [PLUG] Dell linux

I can speak with some authority on this.

Any server can be had without an OS. There is a specific line of desktops called the N-series I believe. Originally they came with NO OS installed and a Free-DOS CD. They seem to have split these out and now they are offering Ubuntu too. Also, the list of systems seems to growing - for instance I don't remember them EVER having a laptop in the N-series.

Dell has several divisions that don't always communicate well. We deal mostly with the Small Business Division. These folks speak english as a first language and live in the US. They are great to deal with but can't offer everything in the home division. With the home division, you might talk to an english-speaker for the sale, but after that it's off-shore support only and language compatibility is hit or miss. This appears to be the division selling the Linux boxes. I cannot get Linux desktops from the Small Biz division directly, it has to be via the Home division. We avoid buying through the home division because of the horrid support. Dell is not ready to give Linux business users this level of support, hence it's not available through the small biz division.

When Was it that you spoke with them? They have been offering PCs with
free-dos for quite a while, and now as we all know Ubuntu pre-installed,
so there is the avoiding the MS tax even if you don't use Ubuntu.

As for corporate customers, there's been lots of noise recently about
them starting to sell Linux to SMBs. I think the rumour is that the
official announcement is going to be at LinuxWorld.
