I agree that it would be appropriate to try an older version of Ubuntu.

You say that you've tried ALSA and are considering OSS. Have you ever bothered with Jack or Pulse? I would definitely exhaust those recourses first, as it's far less work than a reinstall.

No other program other than Hydrogen gives you this performance problem? And you've tried purging Hydrogen and reinstalling it? (Sorry if any of these questions were insulting!)

I'm far from an expert on this. But I would rather see you drop back a version of Ubuntu or 2. Are you eating up the memory?

Don't worry, other people will respond. As for OSS I would say no. The author states in the manual to use OSS only as a last resort.
