My thoughts:

- If you want to monitor traffic levels, you'll need to install DD-WRT
on your router, enable SNMP, and install Cacti.  Optionally, enable
SNMP on your server.

- Running public facing servers from your home network is increasingly
a bad idea, because not only can DDoS attacks cripple you, attackers
may try to get to other machines on your home network.

- If you really want to host low traffic sites, use a low cost webhost
like NearlyFreeSpeech or a low cost VPS provider like Linode or
DigitealOcean.  The cost will likely be cheaper than owning your own
physical server, and a DDoS event won't completely knock you off of
the Internet.
