[PLUG] Linux equivalent of a Windows SID

Every install of Windows has a SID that uniquely identifies it.  If you clone a virtual machine in Windows you must get a new SID.  Is there a Linux equivalent to this, i.e. is there a unique identifier for each Linux instance?

Thank you,
