My first suggestion would be to download and use the in-development lib:

http://script.aculo.us/downloads

It's at 1.5 RC3 as of this email.

Over the weekend I was trying to play with in place editing and only started
getting good results after upgrading.

I tried your sample and it crashed Safari twice. :-(
