s/author's/publisher's/ - Publishers write these things and attach them.

I suspect Vinge already knows that the book is there, given that he's a
CS prof.  I wonder what he thinks?  Neal Stephenson doesn't much mind
_The Big U_, while Bruce Sterling has explicitly allowed copying of some
of his works.
