what's the preferred way for C++ functions called from Perl?

What's the preferred way to have C++ functions wrapped/encapsulated
so they're a Perl module and called from Perl?

My Philly consulting assignment ended, so I can't attend meetings
to ask in person over the best dinners I've enjoyed all year :-(
