i have used a IBM 760E with a no name PCMCIA CDROM and and now a IBM 760ED.
each was under $700. with a one year warr.

I love Thinkpads, but low-budget they ain't. Although I just got one of
their new "budget" notebooks for a friend, the i1440 (about $1500).
Haven't tried Linux on it though...
I think Universal Computing Resources (UCR, King of Prussia/Cherry Hill)
will put laptops together for you. Don't have the number handy, but
they're in directory assistance. I just bought desktop parts from them
and they seem like good people.
