having my viminfo set to 
  '50,f1,\"1000,:20,/20,%,!,n~/.vim/viminfo

where the two settings ' and \" are both covered with different
values, this doesn't solve the problem. trust me, i tried... and
setting it to just what you told me to doesn't work either.

[~/.ssh]# locate viminfo
/etc/vim/syntax/viminfo.vim

where /etc/vim is my vim share directory. but anyway, the syntax file
has nothing to do with this...
