[PLUG] ssh / scp vs rsync weirdness

I've noticed that rsyncing a huge amount of stuff (several GB) over
ssh (rsync --rsh=ssh ...) tends to result in dropped connections (even
over local ethernet, but certainly over adsl/cable modem). Moving the
same stuff by tarring it and scp'ing the tar file works fine.

This has been pretty repeatable.

Any ideas what might be going on?
