The reason I ask is because I had the same problem when running KDE 2.2
It turns out the the Arts sound server that KDE uses was using the
/dev/dsp resource at startup and not letting it go. So when I tried to
use xmms or real player I got the errors you get. I disabled the "Start
sound server at startup" option in KDE control Center and all my output
devices began working.
Just a thought...
