Try using anXious, the Debian configuration tool. It's text-based.
IIRC, you need to install xserver-common and xserver-xfree86 to get
startx. But it's been a little while and my memory might be a bit
faulty on that detail. ("dpkg -S /usr/bin/X11/startx" can't find that
file in a package...)
