I've heard mixed things about the Archos....

I will say this, though -- I have a 20 gig Creative Nomad, one of the older
ones, and it has truly transformed my life. There's a Gnome-based tool for
adding tunes, I believe.

... although I think that the Archos behaves more or less like a regular old
USB hd, which might make it better for linux users.
