Here's the latest news on ps2pdf results:

1. convert the postscript file (vars.trends43.ps in /exp/01111/sp)
using ps2pdf into a pdf file, and view with acrobat reader:  Result is
fine: no ugliness.

2. print from the acrobat reader applied to the above pdf
file to a postscript file.  Result is the same as applying
ghostview to the original postscript file. Ugly.
