On a RedHat system, the version information appears to be contained
in the file /etc/redhat-release. Likewise, on a Debian system see
/etc/debian_version, and on a Slackware system, /etc/slackware-version.
For other distributions, generally speaking, looking for files matching
the patterns /etc/*version* or /etc/*release* seems to be a good
approach.
