Anything from Apple, G4 or newer. Dual boot it OS X / Yellowdog Linux if
you like. That was my original intention when I got my 800MHz Powerbook
G4 a couple years ago and found OS X to be useful enough to not have to
install the second OS.
Firewire is already built into every Mac.
Most OSS that will build on Linux will also build on OS X, sometimes with
a little more effort. Install fink on it and you'll get a nice cross
between "apt-get" from Debian and the ports tree from *BSD that includes
most popular OSS now.
