I should have thought this was a window manager task, not a desktop
environment (e.g., gnome) task.
I use sawfish. There the following line of config would cause a
screen dump on meta-A.
(bind-keys global-keymap "M-A" '/usr/bin/scrot)
It could be configured less arcanely using the graphical config tool.
