Thanks, all. The issue is solved. I tried booting a disk I'd burned on
different media. Though flaky, it did boot and install. Too bad. I was
looking forward to a more creative hack. I think this really is just an
issue of flaky hardware. Also, though it comes a bit late, this was a
Toshiba Satelite 2805-S503 laptop.
