[PLUG] where are gnome errors at startup reported?

Sometimes when I login (via gdm) and gnome starts up, as the march of
icons happens for startup, I sometimes hear a beep and my deskiop
appears a second early.  Something went wrong, but I generally don't
get to find out what.  I look in ~/.xsession-errors, but it's not
shown there.

Anyone know where these errors do get reported?

At issue today, and what I really want to fix, is that when I logged
in I didn't have sound available.  The easiest way to debug this is
surely to figure out what went wrong at gnome startup, since gnome
kind of manages these things.  But I'm a bit lost.

Fwiw, the ogg123 error (google isn't very informative here) is this:

    ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:862:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
    ALSA snd_pcm_open error: Device or resource busy
    Error: Cannot open device alsa09.

I tried mpg123 and play (WAV) with similar results.

But /dev/dsp exists, although I don't know why esd is the listener.
But this doesn't seem unusual to me.
