Unfortunately you're correct - Y-cables can damage the works.
Go with a switching unit of sorts. You can wire one pc straight and the
other two to an A/B switch, using the existing two pairs of spkrs.
You can go deluxe and get one of those devices the scanner people use
that's almost a small pa system. It will probably cost more than your pc's.
You can probably also go with something like a line mixer, which you can
run all pc's to, set the levels, and run one set of spkrs.
I suspect most of this is way more complicated than just running a new
line or using a speaker switch.
If you have any specific wiring questions, you're welcome to email me
offlist.
