Well, I think the usual tactic is to buy the new machine and either:
Plan A: Immediately install an old (legal?) copy of XP on it
Plan B: Use Vista on the machine until finding compatibility problems, then do
Plan A
Of course, why would you bother with that when there's a better alternative...
