OK, the verdict is: at least 4 bad capacitors in the power supply caused
it to flake out and fry the motherboard.
I noticed some odd behavior between using the known good supply and the
stock supply, so I pulled the stock supply and opened it up. It's bad
for sure, but since the MB doesn't work even with the known good supply...
