I've switched from ubuntu-desktop to kubuntu-desktop to xubuntu-desktop
on the same install with no issues. Have you done any craziness with
your sources.list file? If not, this might be something you should
report to launchpad at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu

Also, if you post the errors you're getting to this list, odds are
there's someone who will tell you what to do to fix it without having to
reinstall.

This is the way that I've done it in the past.  What dependency errors
are you getting?
