mount the partition that has your root directory
mount -o rw /dev/sda? /mnt/whatever
edit with nano or your favorite editor /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow
if /etc/passwd has an x in the second field then you need to edit
/etc/shadow.
Read man 5 shadow and man 5 passwd to understand the fields.
